September Vegetables & Their Perfect Meat Pairings

ree

September brings a beautiful shift at the store. Summer vegetables are still lingering, while fall produce starts arriving in full force. It’s a month where you can grill fresh corn one day and roast butternut squash the next.

Here’s a guide to what vegetables are in season this month – and the meats we recommend pairing with them for delicious, simple meals:

Corn

Corn is still sweet and plentiful in early September. Grill it alongside steaks, burgers, or pork chops, or cut it off the cob to mix into ground chicken or turkey tacos for extra crunch and sweetness.

Potatoes

New potatoes and hearty russets are abundant now. They roast beautifully with whole chickens or bone-in chicken thighs, or you can make creamy mashed potatoes to serve with beef short ribs or a pot roast for the ultimate comfort dinner.

Onions

Onions are harvested in late summer and early fall. Caramelize them to top grilled sausages, mix into meatloaf, or roast them in wedges with pork tenderloin and apples for a one-pan dinner.

Carrots

Sweet, tender fall carrots roast quickly and develop rich flavor. Pair them with braised lamb shanks, roasted chicken, or a beef stew for an easy match that looks as good as it tastes.

Winter Squash

Butternut, acorn, and spaghetti squash start showing up in September. Roast squash with pork loin or pork chops or stuff acorn squash halves with a mixture of our fresh sausage and wild rice for a hearty meal.

Apples

While not technically a vegetable, local apples arrive in September and pair wonderfully with meats. Roast apple slices with chicken thighs and pork tenderloin or chop them into a cabbage slaw to top your grilled sausages or pulled pork sandwiches.
